Financial penalties for Vocational Continuous Units

Continuous vocational units are those which are not offered in study periods, and can be commenced at any time of the year. You can withdraw from continuous vocational units within 14 days of enrolling and receive a refund of up to 75% of the unit fee. Financial penalties will depend on the unit from which you want to withdraw.

NOTE: If you enrolled through OUA, you will need to lodge your refund/withdrawal with OUA.

Special Circumstances

The 14 day refund period – Sometimes students are forced to withdraw from their studies due to circumstances beyond their control. If this occurs, students usually have to pay a financial penalty and may forfeit their full fee and receive a “Fail” grade. However, if Special Circumstances can be demonstrated, financial or academic penalties may be reduced or removed.

Special Circumstances can permit a:

  1. Waiver of financial penalty – where you had to withdraw from your unit(s) after the 14 day refund period.
  2. Refund of unit fees – where you paid for your unit(s) up front then had to stop studying after the 14 day refund period.
  3. Approval of withdrawal without academic penalty – where you had to withdraw after the 14 day refund period allowed by Unilearn.

You must make your application for Special Circumstances within 8 weeks from your
enrolment date.

How is your application assessed

Every Special Circumstances application is formally investigated by Unilearn.
Unilearn will assess Special Circumstances applications for waiver of financial penalty and/or refund of unit fees. Unilearn will provide you with written advice within 28 days of the receipt of your application.

If you are not satisfied with the outcome concerning the matters Unilearn considers, you can appeal in writing (with supporting documentation) within 28 days of receiving
written advice. A senior officer of Unilearn will review the case afresh and provide advice within 14 days.
